In this programme, we hear from Martha Beck, best selling author, life coach, 'O' magazine columnist ... and carer.  Hear Martha's ideas about how carers can be kinder to themselves.

We also talk to Dr Rosie Marks, a remarkable Kiwi physician and paediatrician who has devoted her career to supporting families with high health and disability needs.

'You give more care - you deserve more care!' - Martha Beck 

Martha Beck Martha Beck is an inspirational American life coach, academic, writer and columnist, who has a great deal to offer New Zealand carers.  Martha's son Adam has Down Syndrome, and inspired her book Expecting Adam.  Martha has been described by her friend and mentor, Oprah Winfrey, as 'the smartest woman I know'.  In a wide-ranging and inspirational interview with Laurie Hilsgen, Martha reflects on her own experiences and draws on her expertise as a life coach to motivate and help carers.  Read the fascinating transcript, or listen to short audio clips.

Marylynn Maloney Boyes lives in Tawa, Wellington, where she supports her sister, who has a mental illness.  Marylynn grew up in Petone, Wellington in the 1950s and as a child cared for her mother, who was also mentally unwell. 

Marylynn trained as an English teacher, and for the past 15 years has run writing groups for carers, helping them to produce and publish collections of  their own.
